Three Types of Porches You Can Have for Your New Home
When building a home, the porch is an extremely important element to consider. For one, it adds a large amount of curb appeal and it’s something that can welcome you home after a long day at work and you look forward to coming home to.
It can also be a place around home for you to enjoy nice, fresh air and spend some time away from your typical living arrangements. Porches are wonderful aspects of any home, and we will list 3 types of porches for your consideration. Choose the porch you like, and Balwyn builders will consider it in their home plans.
Portico
Also known as the front entry porch, this is the most traditional styled porch that features a pathway and or stair set that leads up the entrance of the home. These porches can be made wider than normal, as well, so that you can also make room for placing a couple of chairs.
This is also the porch type of choice for landscaping, and if you are looking for trees, hedges, and other decorations, they will look best with a portico. This porch can also feature an awning, so that any guest standing outside your door can be protected from rainfall.
Of all the porch types, this is the most affordable type of porch to buy. If you are on a tight budget, you will most likely end up with this porch, but that is not to say that you cannot have your Balwyn builders customize it to your liking.
Farmer’s Porch
Also known as the open porch, these are porches that span the width of the front of the home. These porches are structured with support beams and are barricaded with posts and balusters. With these porches you can not only have a series of chairs for people to sit in, but you can also hang potted plants and have an area to wipe your feet or bathe your pets.
All farmers porches have awnings that protect people from rain, so the farmer’s porch feels like a whole extra room, entirely. Farmer’s porches are traditional looking porches that originated in old fashioned New England style homes. These porches typically are connected to a small set of stairs.
Screen-In Porch
A screened-in porch is very similar to a farmer’s porch, but instead of it being open, it is surrounded by a screen. These screens make the porches look and feel like a separate room entirely, and you normally have a door to enter the porch before you can enter the home.
On one hand, this adds another step in the process of getting inside your home, and any visitors may find it confusing for where to go to knock on your door, considering that the porch acts like an interior.
On the other hand, the purpose of a screened-in porch is to greatly reduce the occurrence of bugs from flying around on the porch. This means that you can enjoy the fresh outdoor air without any bugs, or rain, for that matter.
Another plus to screened-in porches is that you can create them in any shape and size that you prefer. They do not have to be small; they can be as large or as wide as you want them to be.
With a ceiling and screens, you can also safely set up furniture and light fixtures inside this porch and treat it like a place to eat or socialize. The main downside to these poches, of course, is their cost, so we only recommend them to homeowners that are able and seriously willing to spend the extra money.
